Rosey Chan is a natural collaborator and especially thrives in environments of spontaneous improvisation. Endlessly curious and passionate about bringing people together, Chan not only loves performing and creating with others but curating situations and happenings which have the potential to unlock the creative energy of the participants. This page contains a sampling of some of her extensive catalogue of cultural content.
Film Score
Chan was commissioned by the Louise Alexander Gallery to create music for the retrospective exhibition about Guy Bourdin, “Image Maker” (December 2017 – May 2018), curated by Shelly Verthime, at the Helmut Newton Foundation (Berlin).
Bespoke Performance + Live Mix
Chan created a multi-track electronic soundscape punctuated with fragments of Bach (played by cellist Gerald Peregrine) to compliment the artists’ series of sculptural white bronze vessels. The soundscape was performed by Rosey in a live mix at the vernissage of the art exhibition with another version of the score recorded for use at Salone del Mobile
Film Score
Chan was commissioned by the Louise Alexander Gallery to compose the soundtrack to “Cinematic Fragments”, a new film comprised of short movie clips shot by iconic photographer, Guy Bourdin, shown at his April 2016 exhibition curated by Shelly Verthime, “The Portraits”, at Studio des Acacias (Paris).
Filmed performance in collaboration with the Central School of Ballet
Figgis and Chan created a film to raise funds for the dance school shot within the raw construction space slated for its new home. Chan performed an improvisation for the left hand inspired by the composer Scriabin while the dancers improvised in response to the music.
Bespoke Mixed Media Performance
To celebrate the completion of David Chipperfield’s redesign of the Royal Academy of Arts, the Academy commissioned Chan to create a multi-media installation. The result was a live performance between Carnet de Voyage (Chan’s duo with Mimi Xu) and choreographer Zack Winokur, fusing sound, dance and architecture, performed in October 2015.
Filmed performance in collaboration with the Central School of Ballet
A film featuring music composed by Chan and performed by The Central School of Ballet, guest dancer Cressida Bonas and Chan, screened at St. James’ Theatre (London).
Film Music
Chan’s multi-track composition for an abstract animation film by Zaha Hadid Architects shown at the Harlem International Film Festival.
Chan was commissioned to curate and create a multi-day, mixed media performance involving art, fashion, music, film and dance, and collaborated with artists, Zack Winokur, Zowie Broach, the London Contemporary Orchestra, the Royal Ballet, The People Band and Mike Figgis. This resulted in nine performances over three days during Deloitte Ignite, the annual cross-disciplinary arts and culture festival.
Performance art installation
The fashion brand, Boudicca, commissioned Chan to create and perform a live performance art installation involving sound design, lighting, grand piano and projected film (35 minutes) at Villa Lavoir (Paris).
Multi-screen video installation
At the invitation of the art fair, ART HK, Chan created an installation exploring the relationship between music and personal identity. Using biographical material sourced from her family archive combined with new video footage shot in Hong Kong, Adam and Eve are seen in an art gallery while Chan plays “Träumerei” by Schumann with three different screens projecting imagery of her in the present, in the past as a small child and in the future as an old woman.
Mixed media performance for piano and dancers
Mixed media performance combining music and projection
Chan was commissioned by the gallery to create the “anthem” for the group show, “Embassy”, staged during Frieze Art Fair. Chan juxtaposed two pieces of music ironically. One composition written by Rosey, contained nationalistic musical tropes like fanfares, driving drums, trombones and a brass band. The other piece was Chopin’s sublime Nocturne in D Flat, chosen to represent the soul of the fictitious country.
